Opening Ceremony of World Taekwondo Cares Projects for Nepal Held in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, Nepal (August 3, 2019) – The opening ceremony of World Taekwondo (WT) Cares projects for Nepal was held in Kathmandu, Nepal on August 3, 2019.

The Nepal Taekwondo Cares projects for reformatory inmates and female victims of home violence are jointly supported by WT and the Asia Development Foundation (ADF). Under agreement, the Nepal Taekwondo Association carries out the Nepal cares projects for 2019.

The opening ceremony drew hundreds of people, including 88 students from two reformatory inmate centers – the Prisoner Assistance Nepal and the Early Childhood Development Center – and 162 students from four women empowerment centers – Rakshya Nepal, Genesis Academy, Aasha Nepal and Maiti Nepal – all in downtown Kathmandu. The ceremony was held at the National Taekwondo Academy in Lalitpur, Nepal.

The two WT Cares projects for Nepal started in early April 2019 for a one-year period. Under agreement with WT in January 2019, the ADF financially supports the Nepal Cares projects.

Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony were WT President Dr. Chugnwon Choue; ADF Vice President Nam-chul Choue; Honorable Jagat Bahdur Sunar Bishwakarma, minister of youth and sports of Nepal; Mr. Pitambar Timilsina, vice president of the National Sports Council; Honorable Jeevan Ram Shrestha, president of the Nepal Olympic Committee; and Nepal Taekwondo Association President Prakash Shumsher Rana.

Also on hand at the ceremony were Mr. Rick Shin, secretary general of WT Pan America; Mrs. Selma Li, president of GCS International Portland, USA Chapter; and Grand Master Jay-kyun Shin, better known as the “father of Nepal taekwondo.”

During the ceremony, WT President Choue delivered an honorary WT Dan certificate to the Nepal sports minister and the National Sports Council vice president. Dr. Choue also gave WT appreciation plaques and appreciation certificates to Nepali dignitaries in recognition of their dedication to the development of taekwondo in Nepal.

The ceremony featured taekwondo demonstrations by the Nepal Taekwondo Association Demonstration Team and students of the 2019 Nepal Taekwondo Cares programs.

“I wish to thank the Nepal Taekwondo Association and the Asia Development Foundation for supporting these Nepal Taekwondo Cares projects. We want to keep expanding these Cares programs in Nepal,” said WT President Choue in the ceremony.

He continued to say, “Through taekwondo education and training, I wish you to grow up as good global citizens and hope that some of you will become champions of international taekwondo championships.”

Earlier in the day, there was an opening ceremony of a peace statue at the U.N. World Heritage site of Swoyambhu in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The peace statue was dedicated to the founder of GCS International, the late Dr. Young Seek Choue, who proposed the United Nations promulgate the U.N. International Day of Peace in 1981 and the 1986 Year of Peace.

The peace statue text reads: “During the massive earthquake in April 2015 in Nepal, the World Taekwondo carried out an earthquake relief project in Nepal. that project acted as a pilot program for the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, which was established in April 2016. Such initiatives and movements are closely following the spirit and philosophy of Dr. Young Seek Choue’s GCS Movement.”

세계태권도연맹(World Taekwondo, WT 총재 조정원) 네팔 '태권도 케어스' (Taekwondo Cares) 프로젝트 개막식이 네팔 카투만두에서 지난 8월 3일 성공적으로 열렸다.

소년원과 가정폭력 피해 여자 어린이를 위한 태권도 무상 교육 프로그램인 '2019년 네팔 태권도 케어스 프로젝트'는 WT가 주최하고 아시아발전재단(ADF, 이사장 김준일)이 후원하며, '네팔태권도협회'가 카투만두 시내 관련 단체들과 함께 운영하고 있다.

네팔 카투만두 인접 행정 구역인 라리트푸르(Lalitpur)에 소재한 '국립태권도아카데미'에서 열린 개막식 행사에는 수 백 명이 참가했다. 참석자 중에는 소년원 태권도 훈련 단체 2곳에서 88명의 학생들과, 가정폭력 피해 여자 어린이 훈련 단체 4곳에서 162명 학생 전원이 참가했다.

2019 네팔 '태권도 케어스' 프로젝트는 1년간 일정으로 지난 4월 초 시작되었으며, 아시아발전재단이 재정 지원을 하고 있다. WT와 아시아발전재단은 지난 1월 아시아 지역 저개발국가 태권도 지원을 위한 지정기부금 협약을 체결했다.

개막식 참가 주요 인사로는 조정원 WT총재, 조남철 아시아발전재단 상임이사, 자갓 바흐두르 수나르 비시와카르마(Jagat Bahdur Sunar Bishwakarma) 네팔청소년체육부장관, 피탐바르 티밀시나(Pitambar Timilsina) 네팔체육회 부회장, 지반 램 슈레스타(Jeevan Ram Shrestha) 네팔국가올림픽위원회 위원장, 그리고 프라케시 슘셔 라나(Prakash Shumsher Rana) 네팔태권도협회장 등이다.

다른 주요 참석자로는 릭 신(Rick Shin) WT팬암태권도연맹 사무총장, 셀마 리(Selma Li) GCS인터내셔널 미국 포틀랜드 총재, 그리고 '네팔 태권도 대부'로 알려진 신재균 사범 등이다.

조 WT총재는 개막식 행사에서 네팔체육부장관과 네팔체육회 부회장에게 WT명예단증을 그리고 네팔 태권도 발전에 기여한 공이 많은 사람들에게 감사패와 감사장을 수여했다. 

개막식에서 네팔태권도협회시범단 시범과 2019 네팔태권도케어스 프로그램 참가자들로 구성된 시범단의 품새 시범이 있었다.

"네팔 태권도 케어스 프로젝트에 도움을 주고 있는 네팔태권도협회와 아시아발전재단에 감사를 드리며, 세계태권도연맹은 앞으로 네팔에서 더 많은 지원 프로그램을 하기를 원한다"고 조 총재는 개막식 인사말에서 말했다.

"태권도 교육과 훈련을 통해서 케어스 프로그램 참가자 모두가 좋은 세계 시민으로 성장하기를 바라며, 여러분들 중에서 국제태권도선수권대회 챔피언이 나오기를 바란다"고 조 총재는 말했다.

이날 오전에는 UN 유적지로 지정된 네팔 카투만두 스와얌부(Swoyambhu)에서 '평화상' (peace statue) 제막식 행사가 있었다.

본 평화상은 UN에 1981년 'UN세계평화의 날'과 1986년 'UN세계평화의 해" 재정을 주창한 '밝은사회클럽 국제본부'(GCS 인터내셔널) 창설자인 조영식 박사를 위해서 제막되었다.

제막된 평화상 문구에는 "2015년 4월 네팔 대지진 직후 세계태권도연맹이 네팔에서 지진 피해자 지원 프로젝트를 실시했다. 본 지원 행사가 2016년 4월 설립된 '태권도박애재단'(THF)의 시범 사업 중 하나였다. 이러한 지원 활동과 운동은 조영식 박사의 '밝은사회(GCS) 운동'의 정신과 철학을 따른 것이다"라고 쓰여있다.
